Vedic Astrology 12 signs/360 degrees and 27 Stars/108 Padas

Eastern Vedic Astrology
12 Signs and  360 degrees- 27 stars and 108 padas
The 12 main concepts of Vedic Astrology based on Moon Sign
1. The 12 zodiac signs are
Mesha, Vrishabha, Mithuna, Karkataka, Simha, Kanya, Tula, Vrischika, Dhanas, Makara, Kumbha and Meena rasis
2. Each sign has a span of 30 degrees.
The first rasi Mesha 0-30 degrees.  The last rasi Meena 330-360 degrees
3. The 9 planets of our Solar system are
Ravi, Chandra, Mangala, Budha, Guru, Shukra, Shani, Rahu and Ketu.
(The other 3 planets are Uranus,  Neptune and Pluto discovered in the 19th century)
4. Saturn is the slowest moving planet which takes about 2.5 years to transit one sign and the Moon is the fastest moving planet which takes less than 2.5 days to transit one sign
5. The names of the 27 Nakshatras are
Ashwini, Bharani, Krittika, Rohini, Mrigasira, Arudra, Punarvasu, Pushyami, Ashlesha, Magha, Poorvaphalguni, Uttaraphalguni, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Visakha, Anuradha, Jyestha, Moola, Poorvashadha, Uttarashadha, Shravana, Dhanistha, Shatabhistha, Poorvabhadra, Uttarabhadra and Revati
6. The zodiac sign in which the  Moon is present  at the time birth is the janma rasi or moon sign
7. The Nakshatra where the  moon is placed at the time of birth is known as  Janma Nakshatra or birth star
8. A Nakshatra is devided in to 4 padas or quarters.  So,  27 nakshatras have 27X4= 108 padas
9. The Vedic zodiac cycle has 60 years.  The year 2015-2016  is known as Manmadha nama samvatsara
10. The 15 Tithis or 15 lunar phases are
Pratipada(Padyami), Dwiteeya, Triteeya, Chaturthi, Panchami, Shasthi, Saptami, Asthami, Navami, Dashami, Ekadasi, Dwadasi, Trayodasi, Chaturdasi and Poornima or Amavasya.
Each lunar phase has 360/12= 24 degrees.  A lunar year has 12 months X30 days= 360 days.  In this context please remember a solar year has 365.25 days.  So a leap year has in the month of February has  29 days instead of 28 days i.e., one extra day.
11. Dasas are the ruling periods of the nine  planets in operation during the  life time. The Dasa and the the susequent  dasas  depends on the presence of  the Moon  in a nakshatra in your Janma rasi or birth chart.  For example if your birth star is Aswini then the moon is in Mesha rasi and Janma kaala Dasa will start with Ketu dasa.  It is commonly known  Aswini Nakshtra and Mesha rasi
12.  Graha-chara is the current  tranist  of planets in the zodiac.  Gochara os the current  tranist of planets from your birth sign. The above two have a direct  influence on us.  For example if the planet Saturn is present in Dhanu according to graha-chara the planet is present in the 9th sign of the zodiac.  For dhanur rasi the planet Saturn is present in the Janma Rasi
13. The names of the 12 months according to the Vedic system  are

Chaitra, Visakha, Jyestha, Ashadha, Shravana, Bhadrapada, Ashwija, Kartika, Margasira, Pushya, Magha and Phalguna masas

14. Navamsa Calculation
The Constellations of Ketu, Jupiter and Moon start their Navamsa from Mesha and end in Karkataka.
The Constellations of Mars, Saturn and Venus start their Navamsa from Simha and end in Vrichika.
The Constellations of Rahu, Mercury and Sun start their Navamsa from Dhanus and end in Meena.
 Examples:
 1. The constellations of Ketu  start their Navamsa from Mesha. That is Aswini one of the constellations of  Ketu starts its first pada from Mesha. The second pada  in Vrishabha,  the third pada in Mithuna and the fourth pada in Karkataka.  Apply the same to other constellations of the  Ketu, Jupiter and Moon.
2. The next  star  Bharani (starts from first pada) ruled by Venus starts from Simha in Navamsa. The second  pada falls in Kanya, the third pada falls in Thula and the fourth pada falls in Vrichika. The Krittika first pada starts from Dhanus, the second pada falls in  Makara, the third pada falls in Kumbha and the fourth pada in Meena.
