THE 16 GREAT QUALITIES OF SRI RAMA
Sri Rama is the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu among the
ten avataras.
In the Bala
Kanda of the Ramayana the great sage Valmiki asked the
Deva sage Narada to tell about the person who has all good qualities. Sri Narada briefed the following qualities to
Valmiki. The great king Sri Rama has 16
maha-purusha qualities. The 16 qualities
are given below.
1. गुणवान् gunavan/ good and
principled
2. वीर्यवान् viryavan/ very courageous
3. धर्मज्ञः dharmajnah/
knows dharma
4. कृतज्ञः krtajnah/ very thankful
5. सत्य वाक्यो satya vakyo/ truthful and honest
6. धृढ व्रतः dhrdha vratah/ very determined
7. चारित्रेण च युक्तः caritrena ca yuktah/ good-conduct
8. सर्व भूतेषु हितः sarva bhutesu hitah/ fair and good in respect to all
beings
9. विद्वान् vidvan/
very knowledgeful
10.
समर्थः samarthah/
very capable
11. प्रिय दर्शनः priya darsanah/ fair and
good-looking or beautiful
12.आत्मवान् atmavan/ has control
over his mind
13. जित क्रोधो jita krodho/ devoid of anger and other bad qualities
14.
द्युतिमान् dyutiman/
very brilliant and intelligent
15. अनसूयकः anasuyakah/
devoid of jealousy
16. बिभ्यति देवाः bibhyati devah/ even the gods
fear
